About our Collaboration

The partnership between Humber College Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the Mennonite New Life Centre (MNLCT) has resulted in the development of this website to provide critical information and resources for pregnant newcomers who do not have OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) coverage.

This initiative is essential as a significant number of newcomers in Ontario face barriers to accessing prenatal care due to their uninsured status. In 2020, it was estimated that approximately 500,000 people in Ontario lacked provincial health coverage due to their immigration status (Pimienta et al., 2023).

Without insurance, many pregnant persons receive inadequate support, with reports indicating that 80% of uninsured newcomer pregnant women received insufficient care between 2007 and 2010, and 6.5% received no prenatal care at all (Pimienta et al., 2023).

This collaboration bridges this gap by providing a comprehensive and easily accessible database of healthcare services. This website offers detailed information on available resources, ensuring individuals can access the care they need during pregnancy. This collaborative effort between Humber College and MNLCT demonstrates a strong commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for vulnerable populations and ensuring better health outcomes for uninsured pregnant newcomers.
